Description

Named for the 21-Gun Royal Salute in which cannons are fired to honor and/or welcome sovereigns and dignitaries, Royal Salute 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky is an artful blend of whiskies each aged no less than 21 years (the blend was selected by Royal Salute Master Blender Charles Julian himself). The whisky’s deep amber color is complemented by a nose of vanilla, toffee, fudge, old oak and moss. The sweeter palate is enhanced by notes of hazelnut and ginger, and leads to a remarkable finish accented by cereal, red berries and cream.

What It Is

  • Brand / Producer: Royal Salute (Chivas Brothers, under Pernod Ricard).

  • Origin / History: Launched in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II; the name “Royal Salute” refers to the 21‑gun salute fired at royal occasions. The Signature Blend has been the flagship 21‑year expression since then.

  • Age Statement: 21 years — every component of the blend has matured for at least 21 years in oak.

  • Type: Blended Scotch – a mix of malt + grain whiskies. Some of the malt content comes from Speyside distilleries (e.g. Strathisla) among others.

  • ABV: 40%.

  • Packaging: Known for its porcelain/ceramic flagon in colours (ruby, sapphire, emerald) and coupled with a velvet pouch. Elegant presentation.

Tasting Profile & Flavor Notes

Here’s what Royal Salute 21 typically tastes / smells like, based on reviews and official tasting notes:

Element Notes / Impressions
Nose (Aroma) Sweet pears, citrus fruits, vanilla, summer flowers. Subtle oak, with soft sherry and a touch of smoke. Some nutty / dried fruit (raisins, sultanas) suggestions.
Palate Rich fruitiness — orange marmalade, fresh pears, hints of dried fruit. Also spices (hazelnut, warm spices), honey, vanilla fudge. The oak shows in wood, and there’s some dry wood / subtle smoke in longer sips.
Finish Long, sweet and fruity, with lingering oak, spice, sometimes faint smoke, and a dry tail.

Strengths / What Makes It Good

  • The prestige / branding: 21 years is a long maturation time, which tends to add complexity, smoothness, depth.

  • Balanced flavor: It isn’t overwhelmingly smoky or peat‑heavy; more fruit, oak, spices — good for someone who wants depth but also elegance.

  • Presentation: The ceramic flask/flagons + packaging make it appealing for gifting or display.

  • Consistency: It’s a well‑known blend, with history; many drinkers like how it combines richness without being too harsh.
