Description
-
Unlike its Bordeaux neighbors, Pétrus does not contain a “château” on its label for the simple reason that there is no château at the estate (but a winery). Indeed, the cuvée takes its name from the locality or from the Latin origin dating back to Saint Pierre (appearing on the label with the keys to paradise).
Located at the top of the Pomerol plateau, the vines are on average 40 years old with a planting density of 6,300 to 7,000 vines per hectare. Particular care is taken in the vineyard.
Great red wines made solely from Merlot are rare. But on this unique terroir (because it is very clayey), the grape variety produces an absolutely incomparable velvety texture with unparalleled depth. It is simply majestic, with unrivaled power and richness. The wine is concentrated, voluptuous, and supple.
Pair this legendary wine with a characterful dish like truffled pheasant Périgord style, hare stew, or roast lamb shoulder with basil. Serve at 16-18°C. With fabulous aging potential, this wine can be kept for over fifty years in some vintages.
Aromas & Flavour Profile
-
Appearance & Nose: Deep, intense ruby/purple color. Aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, dark plums. Floral touches (violet, iris), hints of marine/mineral influence (shucked oyster shell, crushed stone) and truffle.
-
Palate: Full‑bodied, opulent texture. Velvety tannins, concentrated dark fruit (black cherry, blackberry, cassis). Balanced by refined acidity and a degree of spice and exotic elements (dark chocolate, espresso, subtle woods, maybe licorice). Mineral notes and a marine or saline streak add freshness.
-
Finish: Long, elegant, layered. Lots of depth and lingering fruit, with mineral, floral and slightly smoky or earthy undertones. Very refined despite power.
