About Teeling Blackpitts Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey

What It Is

  • It’s a peated single malt from Teeling Whiskey (Dublin, Ireland).

  • Alcohol by volume: 46% ABV (non‑chill filtered) in the standard version.

  • It’s a No Age Statement (NAS) whiskey — meaning they don’t put a fixed age on the bottle.

How It’s Made

  • Peating / Malt process: Barley is malted with smoke from peat to dry it. The peat gives the smoky character.

  • Distillation: Triple distilled. This tends to mellow out some harsher/medicinal notes often associated with peat, letting smoke + other flavours co‑exist in a more balanced way.

  • Cask maturation: It’s matured in a combination of ex‑bourbon barrels and ex‑Sauternes wine casks. The Sauternes casks contribute sweet winey and fruity notes.

  • Filtration / Treatment: Bottled non‑chill filtered. That helps preserve more flavour/oil and mouthfeel.

Flavor & Tasting Notes

What people report (and what Teeling states) about how it smells / tastes / finishes:

Aspect Notes
Nose (Aroma) BBQ smoke, cloves, butterscotch, orange peel.
Palate (Taste) Applewood smoke, honey, stewed pears, grilled pineapple, all spice.
Finish Salted caramel, wood and savoury smoke. The smoke lingers.

Some drinkers note that the peat is noticeable but not overwhelming — there’s a balance; the fruit & sweet components (from the Sauternes and bourbon casks) help temper the smoke.

What Makes It Interesting / Special

  • Rarity in Irish whiskey: Peated single malts are relatively uncommon in Ireland; most Irish whiskies are unpeated or lightly peated. So this is a distinctive expression.

  • Balance of smoke + sweetness: Thanks to the triple distillation + cask choices (bourbon + Sauternes), there’s a layered profile: smoke, but also fruit, honey, and sweet wine notes. Not just peat/burnt‑wood.

  • Good proof for flavour: 46% ABV gives enough strength to deliver flavour without being too harsh or too watered‑down. Non‑chill filtered helps keep more character.

Trade‑Offs / Things to Know

  • Because it’s NAS, age is not disclosed; some drinkers like knowing how old the whisky is.

  • Smoke is present but more restrained vs heavier peated whiskies (e.g. many Islay Scotch). If you prefer extremely intense peat, this might seem mild.

  • Some find the finish somewhat shorter than expected for the nose + palate strength.

Recognition & Awards

  • It has won at least a Bronze in the World Whiskies Awards 2024 in the “Single Malt Ireland — No Age Statement” category.
