Description

A great alternative to the beloved Montecristo No. 2, for the smoker who favours something on the milder side. Fresh tannin, and salted cedar are mainly notable to begin with, until the first ash drops, and the cigar becomes a little earthier, with the vaguest hint of spice making itself known the further you work your way into the smoke. Deliciously flavourful, and with a cool, long finish. Great cigar.

 Flavour / Smoking Experience

What people commonly trace when smoking the H. Upmann No. 2:

Stage Notes & Impressions
First Third Starts with a mild spiciness, Cuban saltiness; woody / cedar notes; sweeter elements like cocoa or mild chocolate emerge.
Middle Third Richer flavour: coffee, leather, caramel or sweetened tobacco; cedar persists; more complexity in spice; possibly a touch of vanilla or lighter floral / citrus note among the deeper base flavours.
Final Third Strength tends to build; deeper cocoa, earth, darker coffee / wood; the finish is richer and may have more pepper or spice; sweetness dips a little compared to earlier thirds, but the full‐bodied base remains.

 Strengths

  • Balanced complexity: It offers a nice mix of flavours — not overly harsh, has sweetness, wood, spice, leather etc. A good evolution between thirds.

  • Prestigious pedigree: As a Cuban cigar, from the Vuelta Abajo region, made with Cuban filler, binder, and wrapper — often these premium cigars are made with good craftsmanship and good materials.

  • Elegant build & presentation: The torpedo shape with pointed head gives it good appearance; many reviewers praise its draw and style (when well‑rolled)

  • Good “transition” cigar: For those who like cigars that aren’t extremely aggressive but still with character that builds; this fits nicely if you’re in the middle ground between mild & full strength.

Weaknesses / Things to Watch Out For

  • Batch / Construction variation: Some review sources mention uneven burn, tunneling, and construction inconsistencies. Not all cigars are perfect.

  • Strength in final third: The increase in strength and wood/pepper towards the end might be more than some prefer, especially if you like consistency through the smoke.

  • Price & availability: Cuban cigars tend to be expensive (import, duty, rarity). Also, you want to ensure proper storage (humidor, correct humidity), otherwise flavour suffers.

  • Wrapper fragility / finish issues in some sticks: Some users report minor wrapper flaws, or that some sticks have “soft spots” etc. The draw / burn may be affected.
