Description
About Limavady Single Barrel Irish Whiskey
Limavady is an Irish town northwest of Belfast. Situated in the Roe Valley, it has a coastal climate and fertile land that is perfect for making whiskey. That is exactly what the Limavady Distillery began doing in 1750, producing 1.2 million liters per year during its peak. But the distillery was forced to shut down in the 1910s during the Irish whiskey crisis.
Overview
-
Brand & Heritage: Limavady is a resurrected name — tracing back to an original Irish distillery from 1750, revived by Darryl McNally.
-
Release: First released in 2021. “Single Barrel, Single Malt” is their core offering.
How It’s Made
-
Grain: 100% malted Irish barley.
-
Distillation: Triple-distilled in copper pot stills.
-
Maturation & Casking: Aged in ex‑bourbon barrels, then finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks.
-
ABV: 46% alcohol by volume.
-
Bottle & Batch size: Each barrel yields ~846 bottles. Each barrel is bottled separately (barrel number + bottle number on label).
-
Age Statement: It is a non‑age‑statement whiskey — meaning no fixed years on the label.
Flavor & Aroma Profile
Here’s what people generally note in terms of taste and smell:
-
Nose: Rich dried fruits, PX sherry sweetness, toasted vanilla, maybe honey or butterscotch. Some citrus peel.
-
Palate / Taste: Sweet and fruity with spice. Notes of dark fruit (prunes, raisins), vanilla, oak, some maltiness. There is also warmth from spices.
-
Finish: Fairly long; balanced between sweet (bourbon influence) and the darker, dried fruits / sherry character. Some described pepper or warming spice toward the end.
What Makes It Special / Notable
-
It is (at least at time of release) one of very few single barrel, single malt Irish whiskeys. That means each barrel is released on its own rather than blending multiple barrels.
-
The finishing in PX sherry casks adds richness and dried fruit / wine‑like depth, which many whisky enthusiasts appreciate.
-
The revival story: descendant of old Limavady distillers, working to bring back the name, heritage. That adds to the brand character.
