Description
About Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey
In 1782, Walter Teelin opened a distillery along Marrowbone Lane in Dublin, Ireland. At the time, nearly 40 independent distilleries dotted the rolling Irish landscape, the majority of which were centralized in the industrial engine room of the city — the Liberties. “Since 1782 the Teeling family has been crafting Irish Whiskey,” says Jack Teeling, the founder of the Teeling Whiskey Company. “The entrepreneurial spirit that inspired Walter Teeling back in the 18th century has not been diluted over the years and the latest generation of Teelings are committed to innovating and creating unique Irish Whiskeys.”
What It Is & How It’s Made
-
Type: Blended Irish Whiskey — a mix of grain + malt whiskeys.
-
ABV: 46% alcohol by volume.
-
Chill Filtration: Not chill filtered — this helps preserve more of the natural oils/flavours.
-
Cask / Maturation:
-
First aged in ex‑bourbon barrels.
-
Then finished (“married”) in Central American rum casks for up to ~12 months. This rum cask finish gives it some extra sweetness / dried fruit / rum influence.
-
-
Age Statement: No age statement (NAS) — the age of the components is not fixed on the label.
Tasting / Flavour Profile
Here’s how it tends to smell and taste based on reviews and the official notes:
| Element | What You Can Expect |
|---|---|
| Nose (Aroma) | Vanilla, floral & herbal notes, rum raisins, allspice — some sweetness & spice. |
| Palate (Taste) | Creamy vanilla sweetness, dried fruits (like raisins, apricot), gentle spice, wood/ oak undertones. There are also hints of tropical or rum‑influenced character due to the rum cask finish. |
| Finish | Warm, lingering with oak, spice and sweetness. Not extremely long or ultra‑complex but pleasant and warming. |
What Makes It Interesting / Strong Points
-
The rum cask finishing is a differentiator. It adds sweeter, fruitier / dried fruit and some tropical notes not always present in standard Irish blends.
-
Bottled at a good strength (46%) and non‑chill filtered, which helps preserve flavour and mouthfeel. If you’re used to lower ABV or chill filtering, this gives a bit more character.
-
Good “everyday / approachable” profile: enough flavour to be interesting but also smooth enough for general sipping or mixing.
Who It’s Good For
If I were to recommend who would enjoy this most:
-
Someone who likes Irish whiskey but wants something a little more adventurous (rum finish, dried fruit, sweeter profile) without entering into very expensive territory.
-
Someone who wants a bottle that works both neat and in cocktails. The flavour profile gives enough to stand on its own, and the sweetness + fruit + oak make it usable in mixed drinks.
-
Someone exploring Irish blends, or getting oriented with modern Irish whiskey innovation (finishes, cask exploration, etc.).
